Trina May Smith joined us for a one week stay in late July. In early discussions, she planned to make several small new paintings exploring chance, found objects and working outdoors. On her way to Standard Projects she passed an extravagant lawn ornament shop specializing in custom concrete cast and painted animals and figures among many other things. The abundance of visual resources there was undeniable and she went back the next day to take pictures - images that would become part of one major painting during her residency experience. Another painting was based on a scene as she drove into town - a crumbling old barn with layers of advertisements peeling off.
