The studio is located in the former Hortonville Police Station built in 1952. The functionality of this municipal building was undeniable and natural led to establishing a variety of maker spaces within. Plans for Standard Projects began in early 2014. After acquiring the building in July, owner Claire Abitz embarked on one year of renovating to update and delineate spaces. The result yielded residential quarters, a storefront, gallery and visiting artist accommodations in addition to generous and light-filled maker spaces.
The street level contains a retail area and gallery, office space, two painting studios and workspace on the south side and a large wood and metal shop in the north garage. The building is nestled on a slight hill between Black Otter Lake and Black Otter Creek. An additional garage downstairs was renovated into residential space and includes the original 1950's kitchen. Just inside the back parking lot is space for visiting artists, a recording studio and a performance venue.
